Botox® or Dermal Fillers? Which Is the Right Choice for You?

There’s never been a better time to have wrinkles. That’s because there have never been so many ways to get rid of them. But having more choices can be overwhelming. Even if you’ve narrowed it down to a choice between Botox® and dermal fillers, you still may be struggling to decide which is the right one for you.

Dr. Tiffany Su and our team here at Skin Shop medSpa in Houston, Texas, have extensive experience administering both types of wrinkle eliminators, and we’re here to guide you through the details so you can choose the treatment that can best help you reach your aesthetic goals.

How Botox and dermal fillers are alike

Botox and dermal fillers are both minimally invasive, nonsurgical injections. Both treatments take about a half-hour per session. And the results of both injectables are temporary and can be administered again as needed.

With both Botox and fillers, you can go straight back to whatever you were doing before your appointment without any downtime, although it’s a good idea to hold off on strenuous exercise for a few days.

The two products work differently, however, and are designed to address different types of wrinkles and lines.

Botox addresses dynamic expression lines

Look in the mirror and smile. See those lines near your eyes? Now, make an angry face. Notice the creases between your brows? Are these lines still there when your face is at rest? If so, it’s because time and age have etched them into your skin. But that’s what Botox is for.

Designed to relax the facial muscles that contract when you make expressions, Botox goes straight to the heart of the problem. By stopping the muscles, you stop the wrinkles. These injections soften crow’s feet, frown lines between your brows, and horizontal creases across your forehead, giving you a more youthful look.

Made from a purified form of botulinum toxin, Botox blocks nerve signals to the muscles so they relax, inhibiting the lines from forming. Dr. Su also offers other neuromodulators, including Xeomin® and Jeuveau®, as they each offer subtly different effects. Expect to see your results as soon as 24-48 hours following your treatment.

Dermal fillers address static wrinkles and crepey skin

Not all wrinkles are the same. Some crop up as your skin loses the natural layer of fat and the structural support of vital proteins just under the surface. These are static wrinkles, and you can see them when your face is at rest because they have nothing to do with your facial movements.

To smooth out this type of wrinkle, we use dermal fillers to lift and plump sagging skin. Fillers can even lessen the look of acne scars. Here at Skin Shop medSpa, Dr. Su offers a full line of several effective dermal fillers to address your skin issues, including:

Some of these products contain hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in your skin — but there’s less and less as you age. Your body also produces much less collagen as it gets older, and without the volume and structure of that essential protein, your skin deflates like a used balloon. Dermal fillers replace that lost volume.

Combine Botox and dermal fillers for the best of both worlds

Dermal fillers and neuromodulators like Botox both offer great solutions for reducing wrinkles. If you have one type of wrinkle or the other, now you know how to choose the right treatment.

But if you have both types of wrinkles, you’re a perfect candidate for both treatments at once. In fact, getting Botox and dermal fillers together makes the effects of each last even longer.
