When to Consider PRF Therapy for Hair Loss

When to Consider PRF Therapy for Hair Loss

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) therapy may seem like something from science fiction, but it’s been used for years in dentistry and orthopedics. And today, practitioners use it for wrinkle reduction, collagen production, and even to reverse hair loss. Aside from its adaptability, a main benefit of PRF is that it uses your own body’s natural healing powers.

At Skin Shop medSpa, our staff, led by Dr. Tiffany Su, works to bring you the latest and most effective nonsurgical wellness and aesthetics treatments available. PRF therapy is one of the most versatile treatments we offer. PRF as a hair restoration treatment provides a safe and effective way to reach your beauty goals.

PRF therapy, explained

PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is an advanced form of PRP (platelet rich plasmia). In addition to blood platettes found in PRP, PRF also contains white blood cells, fibrin and stem cells. As with PRP, this potent substance is derieved from your own blood.

When you come in for PRF treatments, we draw a small amount of your blood and process it in a machine called a centrifuge. The centrifuge separates out the dynamic components to produce a powerful substance that we then inject into the targeted treatment areas.

How PRF works for hair loss

Researchers are still studying why PRF therapy works. PRF seems to increase your body’s production of dermal papilla cells, which are specialized cells found in hair follicles. Dermal papilla cells are important for hair growth.

Studies show that PRF injections are “likely to reduce hair loss while increasing hair diameter and density.” Researchers have also found that PRF reduces inflammation and increases circulation. With less inflammation, your blood can deliver oxygen and nutrients to your hair follicles, thereby improving hair production.

What to expect with PRF treatment

When you come to Skin Shop medSpa for PRF therapy to address hair loss, we start with a consultation so you can tell us what you hope to achieve. We then develop a plan to help you reach your goals.

If PRF therapy is part of that plan, you can expect us to draw some blood to create your personalized PRF solution. Then, we do a few quick injections at targeted sites on your scalp. The injections don’t take long, and we use very thin needles to get just under the surface of your skin.

Because your PRF solution is composed of components of your blood, there’s no risk of an allergic reaction or similar adverse event. One of the benefits of coming to our office is that Dr. Su ensures all procedures are medically sound and safe.

For best results, you may need to have injections once a month for several months. You may also want to return to the office for maintenance PRF therapy in order to maintain your results.

You don’t have to live with thinning hair and hair loss. Schedule your appointment at Skin Shop medSpa today by calling our office in Houston, Texas, or by using our online booking tool.
